This is a tale about a dog extra-ordinary and his
relationship with its master.
Lycan was found as a pup by Sha on her way to office. It was
a cold winter’s morning when she found him crying in a garbage dump. The cry of
a baby of any species is the most heart tearing sound on this planet. She felt
no different and looked in to find him tucked under the city’s garbage to keep
himself warm. When she looked at those sad eyes, she knew there was no choice
but provides shelter to the dog and called her office and took a sick leave.
Sha was in a stage in life when she didn't entertain the presence of humans
other than her immediate family and some friends scattered over the globe. So
Lycan was like a shelter to many things in her life. Her family members also
couldn't object. The puppy was like an object of affection from the very sight
for almost everyone. Sha’s brother had recently been watching The Underworld
movies and names it Lycan.
Then with time, the puppy grew up into a ferocious Lycan.
Loyal, protective about the master’s family and damn ferocious. Not a soul
could enter the compound with getting the reception of some ferocious barking.
It actually kept the thieves at bay. However, the neighbors hated him as his
sense of providing security was too loud for most to sleep.
So far, the life was as normal for everyone until Lycan’s 2nd
birthday (sha didn’t know the date Lycan was born so she picked a random date
which would be celebrated as Lycan’s birthday like they did for any of the
family members). It was like a transition in its life and it matured into a
more sober and less aggressive beast. Of course, when threatened or at times,
it turned into a monstrous beast that made even Sha’s family members scared of
him.
The first incident most amusing happened on the 3rd
day after his 2nd birthday was celebrated. Past midnight Lycan
started howling under the moonlight. It was also mixed with some barks but mostly
crying. That’s a bad omen for most cultures in the world. And its been told
that a dog actually cries when it senses death, not its own but for the people
where its loyalty lies. No one had every heard Lycan at this state and yes they
got nervous. Sha offered him food and milk but no, nothing would take him away
from his trance. By dawn, much to everyone’s relief he stopped and went off the
sleep which was a celebration for most as they could also go to sleep. Normal
day resumed and the busy life of humans started. It came on the news that about
78 kms away there had been a tragic bridge collapse and death toll went upto
15. People got busy with the political blame game and predictions about Mother
Nature’s fight back. Life went on as normal.
Fast forwarding time to a few months, Lycan’s relation with
one of the Bengali neighbours soured. They just hated dogs no matter how much
use it could bring to them. There were a couple of instances when Lycan was food
poisoned but survived. It was the summer the following year when Lycan again
cried at the moon, the same way he did before the bride incident. Till that
point in time, no one had related the incident to him, there was no reason to.
It was more of a co-incidence. This time too, everyone remembered what happened
the previous year, the night before the accident. This time he cried till
eternity. The next day there was a bomb blast in the city killing more than 25
people. It was actually Sha who vaguely connected her pets tears with the
deaths. But she didn't want to tell anyone as it was most likely to be labelled
as imagination of a kid.
There was a 3rd incident too. The same ritual. He
would cry out at night and there was a mass food poisoning at some school
leading to a huge number of deaths and serious casualties. This is when people
thought on the same lines as Sha. India is a land of superstitions and such
incidents are religiously followed as signs of gods.
The fairy tale ended last month. Lycan cried for 3
continuous nights and each day people would anticipate disastrous news but
nothing happened till the 3rd night. Actually on the morning the
following day, Sha woke up and went to check if all her family members were ok.
They were fine but the family member from the other species was not to be seen
or heard. There was no scratching of the nails on the doors or a mild barks.
Everyone started looking for him, finally they found him on the ground at the
backyard coiled up in the grasp of probably a 8 feet long python. Neither did
he or the python moved. When they moved closer to the bodies to check if there
was any life left, they saw the neck of the python in his jaws which resulted
in the reptile’s death. And the python’s muscles could have taken Lycan’s life.
I don’t know if any of this makes any sense or could it just
be coincidence at its very best. Some things are best left not reasoned with.
Lycan died at the age of 4 years and 6 months.
